Hays market update: HR opportunities in Cardiff

HR generalist skills

The private sector is fuelling a steady demand for interim and fixed-term contract HR professionals with generalist experience in Cardiff. Although HR has developed into an increasingly specialist occupation that encompasses many separate disciplines, the economic downturn has brought a shift in emphasis towards more generalist skills, as organisations are having to make best use of their ‘human’ assets. Professionals now have to take on more general HR responsibilities such as administration, recruitment or employee relations.

HR interim opportunities

Workers are being recruited in order to provide maternity cover or for specific short-term projects. In addition, many companies have had to make voluntary redundancies and therefore cannot recruit new permanent hires. HR professionals in the region are now more willing to consider interim work and are taking advantage of the growing number of opportunities.

Interim work can be beneficial for both employers and employees, with one of the key motivations being the ability to continually move between projects and gain a broader range of experience of different organisations. Demand for specific HR interim skills in the private sector includes experience of employee relations, particularly disciplinary procedures, grievances or employee management. Sectors currently recruiting include financial services and manufacturing. Movement within the public sector is less prevalent, with the exception of housing associations, as many employers have frozen recruitment and are instead coping with their current workforce.

While salaries across Cardiff have remained steady, jobseekers have become more flexible and are far more willing to negotiate. Salary entry levels on a permanent contract can range anywhere from £25-31,000 for HR advisors, £35-45,000 for HR managers, £30,000 for learning & development advisors and £46,000 for management development specialists.

Wales has a reputation for good quality of life and this is certainly true of Cardiff. As a capital city, Cardiff is compact but is home to many national and multinational businesses. Getting around the city is quick and easy and a lot of people use public transport, a large number also commute to work because travelling to Cardiff does not present the same stresses as life in an over-populated city centre. Within the centre you will find unique attractions, top class entertainment, innovative and historical architecture as well as peaceful parklands.”
